Life in the metro can get so tiring at times. We have traffic congestion and pollution that have become the norm.  These are compounded by pressures at work and even at home. Gone are the days when we can leave our workload behind once we punch out. Thanks to our mobile devices we can now be reached wherever we are – 24/7. We have learned to cope with the daily grind.  However, the day-to-day hassles can add up leaving us drained and weary. On the other hand, we may experience a major trauma in our lives brought about by a break-up, for example. Major setbacks may lead to withdrawal and even depression. Whatever the reason, we regard these minor and major difficulties as stressful.

Are All Stressors Bad?

We are all familiar with the adage, “The only thing constant in life is change”. Stress is primarily the body’s response to change.  The body can respond to these changes physically, mentally, and emotionally. Stress is part of everyday life.  Our bodies have evolved to experience stress and react to it.  Not all stress is bad because even upbeat life changes such as a promotion or taking a holiday can produce stress. The stress brought about positive events is called eustress. This type of stress motivates us and improves our performance. Think of activities you love doing – shopping, hiking, board games.  Doing your favorite activities makes you feel excited. You are in the zone, so to speak because you are focused and happy.

On the other hand, there is stress makes you feel nervous or sad. Stress brought about by negative events is called distress.  This toxic stress can lead to mental and physical problems. People affected by distress can become irritable, depressed and withdrawn.  Events that can bring about negative stress may result from job-related demands, illness or the death of a loved one. What makes distress so troubling is when people engage in compulsive use of substances or activities to ease their problem.  Sufferers may turn to alcohol, food, gambling or drugs. Instead of returning the person’s body into a relaxed state, they only add more distress.

Indeed, stress is a part of our life. The pioneer of the study of stress, Hans Selye said, “It is not stress that kills us, it is our reaction to it”. We can’t eliminate stress but we can develop habits and the right attitude to overcome it. Accept the fact that there are events you cannot control i.e. traffic, inflation. It pays to have healthy coping mechanisms like meditation and support from family and colleagues. Take time out for a well-earned rest and relaxation.

You Deserve It

You may receive praises from working overtime and sleeping late to finish a business proposal. Surely, you’ll get that promotion and bonus. But too much work can take its toll. Motivational speaker and author, Jim Rohn, rightly said, “Take care of your body.  It’s the only place you have to live”.  The effects of toxic stress can accumulate in our body and psyche. You are a hard worker and you deserve some TLC.

Spoil Yourself

With the cost of living rising, you may think that pampering yourself at a spa is frivolous. But whatever your profession is, it’s a MUST to look your best. Looking and feeling great is not vanity but rather a necessity.

Spas have been known as a place of healing and wellness since ancient times. They were famous for their warm mineral waters that relieved pain and cured ailments.  Modern spas are havens for relaxation and rejuvenation.  They offer massages, facials, aromatherapy and nail treatments under one roof. There are spas that offer either massages or facials only.  While some offer only nail treatments.  Regardless, all spas are an oasis for calm and tranquility.

Choosing the Best Spa in Metro Manila

If you work or reside in Metro Manila, then you are indeed fortunate. There are hundreds of spas in Metro Manila ranging from budget-friendly to opulent.  One is spoiled for choices. Here are pointers to look for the best spa in Metro Manila, Philippines.

  • Environment: It should have a relaxed and positive ambiance. Insulated from the hubbub of the mall or street. The temperature should be just right. Overall, the spa should look inviting, smell good and comfortable. A spa should have a safe and secure parking area.
  • Well-trained Staff: The staff must be courteous, polite and knowledgeable. They should be able to answer any question you may have about their services. The staff attending to you should be sensitive to your need. This includes asking you if you are comfortable or satisfied during your stay during your treatment. They should also ask you if you any allergies or pre-existing medical conditions (ex. Diabetes, hypertension) that may affect your chosen spa treatment. Your therapist should be skilled and experienced at doing your chosen treatment or therapy.
  • Amenities: It should have clean towels, comfy chairs, and firm massage mattresses. Comfort rooms should be spotless. The spa should have lockers or hooks for your personal belongings. Complimentary refreshments during or after a relaxing treatment would also be nice.
  • Value for Money: The cost of treatment and therapy should be clear. No hidden charges or fine print, please. Affordable or high-end, you should get your money’s worth. The treatment or therapy should be performed as advertised. Also, a number of spas do upsell. Ask why they are recommending the therapy or treatment for you. Consider the pros and cons. A reputable spa should not push treatments or products you do not need.
  • Treatment Packages: Spas often bundle treatments in delightful packages. For example, a spa package may include body scrub, Thai massage and facial. Inquire about these packages because they are simply godsend.
  • Check Online Reviews: Today’s spa clients are quick to post their reviews online. Check out their comments or recommendations about a spa. You can’t please everyone, but avoid spas that have too many negative reviews. Remember, you want to relax. Perhaps you can even ask your friends to point you to their favorite spa.

I hope you find these pointers helpful. Pamper yourself once in a while. Enjoy the best life can offer.
